SCART or S-Video by Geoff Lane
It has always confused me a wee bit as to which connection is preferable - SCART or S-Video. I've got a couple of quite new TVs, neither of which have an S-Video input but I have an older video recorder that does have S-Video. All have the composite connections but I've tended to use SCART due to its simplicity - I am losing out by not trying S-Video. Geoff Lane

Sound encoding question by Steve Jackson
Ok, noob alert. I picked up a miniDV camcorder today and then popped to Jessops and got them to price match their £79.99 Pinnacle Studio v9 with firewire card and cable package with the same one online at Amazon for £39.99, so result there! Anyway, I made a short 4 minute recording that played back ok on the camcorder itself and via S-Video on the TV from the camcorder. It also played...

gorblimey! by ps
I'm "well behind" with my dv footage responsibilities. I bought a 160GB USB2 external drive to ease my space problems the other day and have used over half of it already. I didn't realise I had so many tapes with footage I hadn't captured. phew! Also upgraded to Pinnacle Studio 9 over the holidays, its a LOT more stable than 8.1 ever was. I only upgraded when 8.1 refused to burn my dvd's...

Newbie questions - PC specs for rendering by Wally
Hi. I'm just getting into doing video on my PC. Haven't done this before, apart from a little messing around with captured footage. My two main interests are recording TV programs for burning to DVD (ie, basic VCR function), and making short movies with music. The music vids would involve at least some cutting and splicing, possibly graphical overlays, and the dubbing of music and sound...

Premiere field order question by Muxton
If I'm capturing from a mini DV camcorder via firewire directly to Premiere 6.5 as DV-AVI, then exporting from Premiere back to DV-AVI prior to converting to DVD via appropriate software, am I correct in assuming that the field order setting in Premiere is irrelevant? I generated 3 short identical clips using upper field first, lower field first and no fields, and I couldn't see any difference...

How to change compression on Canon PowerShot A85? by John
Hello. I know how to change the resolution on the Canon Digital Camera PowerShot A85 from L, M1, M2, S and Postcard etc, however I don't have a clue how to change the compression between Superfine, Fine and Normal. If you can help me with this I'd be very grateful. The Camera was a present for my mother. Unfortunately the instructions it came with were German, so I have to buy...

DVD Playback Formats by Geoff Lane
I understand the differing DVD medias but am finding the information given on the boxes confusing. Would I be correct in assuming that a player stating it is compatible with DVD +/- RW would also play DVD +/- R ok but that a player showing compatibility with DVD +/- R may not playback rewritables? Geoff Lane

Newbie zoom question. by Eatmorepies
I shall soon be buying my first camcorder; I've had a read of the posts and the replies and learned a lot in a short time - thanks for the information. But - I can't find out what 20 times optical zoom means in terms of focal length as I understand it. I am used to a 35mm SLR (and a G5 digital still camera). How does 20x optical zoom translate into 35mm focal length? Thanks

digital time-lapse by pixelfreak
I'm interested in possibly getting into digital video as a hobby. One thing I'd like to do is time-lapse video of landscapes. Do any of the reasonably priced video cameras support this?? I once saw a photographer doing digital HD with what looked like a very expensive camera. He had what looked like some sort of box that attached to the camera and forwarded the frames. Looked way to...

HighMAT by Julian
Having just bought a new DV camcorder, I am looking at ways to burn to CD to view on a DVD player. Having established that I need a new DVD player as mine is not VCD compatible (thanks guys), and having read Papa John's article (thanks again) at http://www.eicsoftware.com/PapaJohn/MM2/MM2-CD.html , I am considering buying a highmat DVD so I can burn WMV files straight to CD. From what I have...

Vaio Firewire connection problem by John Bornholt
This is really a PC problem, but I've had little luck with PC people and thought that someone in this group may have come across the same firewire problem. I sometimes use a Sony Vaio laptop with camcorders. When I upgraded my Vaio PCG-F709 to Win2000 a while back, I did not notice that the firewire port appears to be unavailable. i.e. It is not in the list of ports when I go to Sony...

media player output to firewire by tg
does anyone know of a windows-based media player that will play an avi/mpg/wmv file to firewire device? (as well as the desktop). I did a google search on this but didn't find much. I know that Adobe Premier Pro will send it's content to a firewire device but it's a bit of a polava starting it all up and importing the clip. I've also tried scenanalyser live but wasn't impressed with it, one...

Looking for USB video streaming driver for JVC to use on WinXP by km
We have visitors who have a JVC GR-DX28EK camera. Unfortunately they have not brought their software CD. This camera has Firewire and USB connection. I do not have Firewire connectivity but was hoping to download to PC via USB. Having searched JVC sites and other driver sites I cannot find a USB driver. It seems to be listed in user manuals as USB Video Streaming Driver. WinXP will not...

£500 budget for a DVD recorder plus new camcorder by Phil
Looking at buying a new camcorder plus a DVD recorder, within a £500 (ish) budget. Any thoughts on these for a choice: ?? Panasonic DMRE 65 EBS (£230 at richer sounds) + JVC Mini DV GR-D23 (£208 at somewhere online) or maybe the JVC Mini DV GR-DX28 at £276.

Problems with vcd by Jules
I can not play vcds on my dvd player (it's an lg dv8731 if that helps), it just rejects the cd. Browsing the internet suggests that this model should play vcds, but the manual does not mention them, just mp3 and wma. Is there anyway round this? Anything I can do to the dvd player to make it accept ..dat formats? Cheers, J

Panasonic GS120 How do I download to PC? by Trevor Appleton
Have now had my camcorder three weeks and can't work out how to download to PC. Someone here told me I needed a firewire cable, so its just arrived but doesn't fit the camcorder. The only PC looking connection is USB in ther handbook. Is this just for stills from the memory card?
