Default Studio 8......Dropped frames on DV output......Update

In an effort to try to cure the Dropped frame problem, I ditched
studio 8 and got Vegas 4.

Vegas is extremely good, With more control over the edit than Studio
offers and no glitches at all.

I Recaptured my film and edited it. I output it to the camcorder and
to my horror exactly the same problem of dropped frames
occured......completly random, although usually about 30 sec to a
minute apart

After alot of thinking, I thought there might be a chance that my
Broadband Cable modem (which is always switched on and connected via
USB) could be interfering with the firewire transfere. So I shut down
the machine and unplugged the USB cable from the modem, rebooted and
hey-presto no more dropped frames on output!!

Just goes to show, there are many variables that can affect video
transfere..not all of which are immediately obvious.

The golden rule for either video capture or export to tape is, DON'T run any
other software other than that needed to run the machine and your NLE
system, that means Broadband, firewall, anti virus etc. all stopped. Sorry
that you learnt that the expencive way !... :~(

Unrelated to video but think about connecting your cable modem via a
NIC, received wisdom is that it's the best way to go as it uses less
computer resources and you can pick one up for about a tenner.

As I keep reminding folk here, anything which uses system resources
while doing video work can screw things up. And its amazing how many
things sit in the background grabbing CPU/memory without you realising
it. That's why I keep tub-thumping about using EndItAll before doing any
video work.

I see your point; I'm not sure its that simple. As I seem to keep
saying, dv out on my duron800 never did work, in spite of tweaks and
disabling of everything in sight and of a good deal not in sight. New
machine (granted an athlon2500, so just a tadge faster) works straight
off - lan, firewall, xp services, the lot still running. At least, I
got a straight 5 minutes of video out to camera the other day without
error, while testing the new box, with no special precautions.

Must depend on whether the gremlins are happy.......
