If I have a film bought new on VHS in the early 90s, am I entitled to
download a digital copy of it, for the higher quality, or do I have
to pay for it again? (in which case forget it!)

I put the "E" in "WWE". Eddie #2 - the next best thing. Excuse my lack
of knowledge. Don't blame me. Blame what possesses me. Please do not
comment on my spelling. This is a gimmick. I repeat, this IS a gimmick.
And no, this isn't mean to rhyme. Or make sense. My sig. breaks all the
rules. Live with it. Or deal with it. Alternatively you can eat me. I
blame Blueyonder. (aka. Blueblunder, Blueblunderless, noclueBlunder,
Clueyonderless, Noclueyonderless etc.) with their stupid Broadband
(aka. Fraudband) 1 megabit connection (aka. one mega sh*t
incorrection). England.Chat Post Of The Month WINNER: September 2002

I'm not normally one to advocate piracy, but...

I'll buy music on a cd, because I think it's only fair that I pay for
entertainment. I tend to go to CD wow rather than pay uk prices, but I'm
paying for the music. If I then scratch the cd, I'll replace by downloading
it. I've already paid the people who made that music for their work so IMO
I shouldn't have to pay again. The same goes for if I bought somthing on
vinyl or VHS.

I suppose the only argument against is that I'm using the work of the
digital compressionist without paying for it.

If I were you I would copy the CD, if you are downloading MP3 versions
then you are suffering a quality loss, if you copy the CD it should be
exactly the same.

True, but I'd tollerate a 160 bitrate lame mp3, with a seperate crc. I'm
not saying there's no drop in quality, but if I don't have the original to
hand it's a compramise. A lot of the audio on my older avi rips (from dvds
I own) is in this format and I have found it to be an acceptably small loss
in quality.
