| Camera (Canon MV 550i) manual says "Don't have a tape in the camera when transferring VHS through camcorder to computer" (iMovie 6), and footage from VHS player clear as crystal on camcorder screen, but keep getting "Camera no tape" message in iMovie window. Computer recognises camcorder as it shows in iMovie's source dropdown list and also in System Profiler. Even more baffling, Apple's Quicktime Player Pro DOES accept everything via the same setup (but only allows a few minutes of movie recording). I've tried all suggestions on this problem, Apple website, discussions and elsewhere, but still getting "Camera No Tape" message. Tried: changing firewire cables and ports switching camera off/on again removing iMovie .plist from computer logout and restart of computer etc., etc. I've also tried iMovie on a Mac laptop with the same setup, but this, too, says no tape in camera. Can anyone help, please? (I haven't tried such transfers for several months, but last year all went without a hitch!) Thanks for any suggestions B.S. |

| I don't use the over-priced Apple hardware/software. But have a Sony DV cam and conducted same transfers as you are attempting. I found with my Sony DV for an external video device conected via line level composite feed to DV cam, that for Pass through to firewire to PC and I had to access the DV cam's menus and select "monitor" and importantly in the Sony to select "Line" for source. Your first port of call should be the support link for your DV cam on the Canon site, they may have forums where others can guide you through configuring your DV cam. But assumed it will same as my Sony DV cam: In menus select "line" as source Then select "monitor" (as in monitoring the feed.) It is a configuration issue with the cam. I don't about iMovie but if I want to do that in my software (Sony Vegas), I have to turn off the "enable DVD device control" option in the capture window. If I don't, the software incorrectly assumes its controlling a DVD device and refuses to operate as there is no DV device to control. Mike |

If it's any consolation, I've lost a similar ability in the move from capturing live DV on XP's "Windows Movie Maker" to capturing it on Windows 7 "Windows Live Movie Maker". WLMM seems only able to capture from a tape. A stream from an active camera with no tape (no tape means no standby after five minutes) cannot be captured. Having said that, Microsoft has updated all the Windows Live stuff this morning. My new email/newsgroup client looks crap, but I'll forgive them if they've re-enabled the passthrough feature, |
