| Hi, I have a Canon XL2 which has a problem in that the 'DV out' does not work. Alll other outputs work fine. I have sought a quote from Jessops to repair the camera. They have quoted £407 and the repair description is 'Parts - 1 Main BD ASSY'. Can anyone assist in relation to the neature of the repair suggested and the cost? thanks mmcd |

They're quoting you the price to replace the main board (which may be necessary.) These things are very fiddly to work on, so a large part of that will be labour costs. Sell it as faulty as described on ebay to recover some cash towards a new one? Do try it on another PC etc before doing anything though, in case the DV problem is at that end or with the DV cable.. HTH, Well, if they're like Sony, it'll be a fixed price repair, which means it won't bear much relation to the cost of bits+labour for your job. At least your quote is well within the value of the machine. Is this another firewire-took-fire job, like my Sony? Rumour has it that when you hot-plug the supposedly hot-pluggable connectors, the power can hit the signal line and zap it. Is that correct? -- Mike Scott (unet2 at [deletethis] scottsonline.org.uk) Harlow Essex England |

That might be possible Mike, especially if hooked-up to a 6-pin cable as those have power lines as well as signal. Could also be a static discharge when connecting the cable. My money would be on the tiny socket on the camera (possibly its solder connections to the main board) being damaged. As you say, they're not a very strong design. Cheers, -- Rob |

I don't know what it is with connector designers these days. In the old days, they were /robust/. Now we have firewire ('nuff said); SATA connectors that wobble and are weak and USB connectors that can't cope with real life. And there's no real need for the design shoddiness. -- Mike Scott (unet2 at [deletethis] scottsonline.org.uk) Harlow Essex England |

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a secondhand MiniDV camera? You'd lose the ability to shoot 90min per tape, but that's a small price for a 90% (ish) saving on the XL2 repair. |

The XL2 produces the best recordings I have come across You said it's just the DV out that's broken on your XL2 So you can continue to film using the XL2, then transfer the resulting footage to your PC via a cheap and cheerful consumer MiniDV camera. Plus you have the benefit (albeit in an unlikely scenario) that you can continue to film while the "capture" is taking place. The reason you lose LP mode is that different manufacturers have different standards when it comes to the slowing down of tape. My XL1 and XM1 can read each other's LP tapes, but my little sony handycam can't read them (or vice versa) |
