Default Problem Playing MPEGs

My daughter has a WinTV PVR900 device.

She recently recorded 4 programs, each play fine in VLC but using
Windows Media Player or an Iomega media player device (No computer
needed) I get major sound video sync problems.

What would be the reason for this.

Could be lots of things. In what format are they you say Mpeg but is it Mpeg
1, 2 or 4 that later will have an avi icon.
Maybe the other devices don have the correct codec for the format

Not 100% sure, properties merely show mpeg.

They were created with WinTV and I think they use mpeg2

Media player is not used much so may be missing some codecs but the
Iomega media player had the latest firmware so I assume is just not able
to deal with the files properly.

Most TV cards and USB adapters have software that can be configured in many
ways and called something like high quality, best , good, standard. What
this does is limit the Bits per sec. Media player does not come with the
MPEG 2 codec as its a commercial to be paid for codec but the win TV
software probably included it so it should work.
My archos 605 Media player needed a separate purchase for Mpeg 2 and will
play but It might get a bit uppity about playing any DRM protected Video

I only appear to have one setting, 2048 bps and shows DVD quality.

Download VLC as a media player - it has it's own codec's - also the file may
contain a couple of soundtracks and subs etc that is confusing WiMP...

I have VLC and it plays fine but the Iomega screenplay enables
convenience of playback via the TV.

VLC comes with ffdshow codec pack. Its quiet likely that the codec that VLC
is using is not available to the other players

Possibly, I am sure Iomega will resolve this with firmware updates but I
can't afford to take that chance and think the device will have to go
back. It doesn't do what it says on the box.
