I did a straight copy of the original WinTV MPEGs to a DVD and they played fine on a Proline TV with built in DVD player as well as 8 year old Philips TV with built in DVD player. The latter sealed it for me, if an old Philips machine can play the files OK then a new device surely should. Thanks for your advice, I learnt a bit about the make up of video files. Geoff Lane |

Geoff Lane Hi I had a look for your Iomega Screenplay, and it transpires it it is a rebadged version of the korean made Hyundai Media recorder Model HDR-350Q http://www.aria.co.uk/VendorStores/H...roductId=29526 As is the Ellion HMR-700 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ellion-HMR-7.../dp/B000TF6BZ4 Now, if you do a search on these products, the common issue seems to be they require a firmware update to ensure compatibility and fix bugs etc. This is very similar to issues with DVD burners, that require firmware updates to make compatible with the ever expanding range of blank media. If you do a more profound search than the one I performed, you will find that many have found that a firmware update from one of the others will work with any, the only issue seems to be that the firmware update that would increase the max capacity from 500gb to one terrabyte only works with the Hyundai, not with the Ellion or Iomega, but all other firmware updates do work with all models, and in your case would seemingly cure the MPEG2 compatibility issues. If you still have the Iomega, and you would like to try the firmware update option, let me know and I'll look up the update and try and compile a guide for you. But... It is important to note, that though an Ellion (Or Hyundai) firmware update would work, it may well invalidate the warranty? Another option is to convert the WinTV MPEG2 files to another file format - WMV, DviX etc, this may result in a higher compatibility ratio than with MPEG2's, it is worth a try, if you'd like I can direct you to a free download that converts to all formats, and I'll supply a full guide. Let me know what route you'd like to try. |

Geoff Lane OK Geoff, I've compiled a guide on how to convert WinTV files to a more compatible format for your Iomega media player. This is the freeware, and it is excellent and a beauty to use: http://www.softpedia.com/progScreens...hot-93342.html To download, just click the "free download" button, Do NOT select to open, but save to a folder - desktop, or My Documents etc. Now, before you do anything, read the guide I've composed, and the email too. GoTo: Google Click on mail link Enter user nym of: wintvrepair ) and password: usenetng Read *carefully* the latest email Be aware of the "warnings" in said email. |

Geoff Lane OK Geoff, this link is to the Ellion site, their HMR-700A is supposedly an identical model to your Iomega. Do a deeper search than I did, but it seems many have used these upgrades for their Iomega and Hyundai's. http://www.elliondigital.com/eng/download02.html Firmware is basic code flashed to a devices nuram, it is used to upgrade and fix bugs etc. Now the But's.... Firmware upgrades rarely can be undone. Unknown if that is the case with the Iomega, but go into the upgrade as it being permanent - irreversible? Follow exactly the instructions to perform the upgrade. A firmware upgrade from one OEM for a device of another, even though they are identical models, will very likely invalidate your Iomega's warranty |

I am in contact with Iomega over this problem and wonder why, if the iomega device is the same as hyundai and ellion, Iomega do not offer a firmware update, I have tried the Iomega firmware update to no avail. I will obviously have to be careful about using any non Iomega firmware updates as the device is less than a month old but if it save the aggro of returning the device it may be an option. I'll let you know how I get on. Geoff Lane |

It requires connection to a USB HDD formatted specifically, or to a PC accessing content from an NTFS HDD. It seems their software has to be installed, so restrictive with other media software It then acts as medium to a display for the HDD media content It has severe restrictions etc. And is far from impressive. And though on their site they marked it under the Screenplay marque, it is apparently marketed as the Rev(?). This is the actual model that is marketed as the screenplay: http://www.itreviews.co.uk/hardware/h1693.htm I small bit of homework reveals this to be the most limited of all the identical models - Hyundai and Ellion. Only the Ellion is currently "futureproofed" inasmuch as guides and firmware available for increasing capacity to 1tb. Assumed they all use the same scaling chipset, but impossible to discern which one? Good luck. |

It seems their software has to be installed, so restrictive with other media software. Thanks for all your efforts. It was bought as a present for my adult daughter, the reason I went for this device was it is very small and compact, could easily fit in a pocket. She has a WinTV device fitted to her computer so I assumed it would be any easy task to copy and saved media to a USB flash drive and then playback on a TV using the Screenplay. With larger flash USB drives being very cheap now it looked to be a useful portable device but, hey ho. If my 6 year old Philips TV can play the files OK on its built in DVD player then the Iomega certainly should. Iomega are offering a replacement so suspect they feel it should play the files but if not I will demand a refund as 'Not fit for purpose' under the Sale of Goods Act. Geoff Lane |
