Hi,

After downloading the trial of Sony Vegas Studio Platinum 9, I eventually
(after some hours) found it won't import sound with avi files:
http://tinyurl.com/5ppn4c

On the basis that I am looking to pay for video editing software that will
actually do the job without being dependant on 3rd party plugs, can anyone
recommend a decent product for under £100.

This will only be used perhaps 6 times a year, so I don't have a need to
learn the ins and outs of every option. Just simple and reliable clipping,
editing etc.

TIA for every personal recommendation suggested.

Are you sure that it's not just a restriction in the trail version,
sorry but I haven't followed your URL as I do not follow any
tinyurl.com link for security reasons, perhaps you could post the full
URL? Normally one of the things people prise about the Vegas family of
video editors is their audio capabilities!

Have you looked at Adobe Premiere Elements
(http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Adobe_Premiere_Elements_3.html), in
fact for just over your 100 quid you can get both Premiere and
Photoshop Elements...

Ah but what kind of avi. That can cover many file formats some of which even
have sub formats like MPEG 4
Certainly it can import sound and video in an untargeted file as can other
editors. the simple ones at low cost are Pinnacle studio 11 or 12, 12 having
just been released Ulead Video studio 11 Sony as you have tried. Director
and more. all will work from camcorder files but may well get tripped up by
very highly compressed files that are shared on the net. They will also
include burning soft ware for making DVD's from your clips.
I have used Pinnacle 7 8 and 9 with out problems though there where lots
of complaints about crashing I now have 11 and I'm sticking there, Price
wise look at Amazon you may well find that the price is less then half of
what the Manufactures and PC world are asking
You will also have Movie maker that is free from Microsoft this makes avi's
that can later be converted and burnt to disc as DVD with Nero if you have
that otherwise it makes wmv's. these can not be viewed on stand alone DVD
players but can be on a computer. May be all you need

Based on your last sentence "Just simple and reliable clipping,
editing etc. I would suggest you see if AVI Trimmer
http://www.solveigmm.com/?Products&p=AVITrimmer fulfils your needs and it's
free. Then there is VirtualDub http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/ and
MPEGStreamclip http://www.squared5.com/ that's worth having also free.

VirtualDub is, in many peoples opinion, an essential part of any
computer based video 'tool kit' regardless of what other video
edition/possessing programmes one also has.

Not really on topic, but if you prefix tinyurl with "preview." you'll be
taken to the tinyurl page first and it will tell you where you're going if
you follow the link. For example, in this case, you'd use
http://preview.tinyurl.com/5ppn4c

Hope it helps.

No, not really! One still needs to *go via* the 'tinyurl' web
server...

Some people are really hard to please. What is it about the tinyurl server
that upsets you?

I don't trust it or those behind it, why can't people just post the
original URL, what is the problem with that - surely it's no more
difficult to copy and paste the original URL than getting and then
posting one of these shorter URLs? If people want *me* to follow a
URL, so that *I might help them*, then they either do it my way or
they don't get the help they might otherwise get (and I'm sure than
I'm not the only person who thinks that way either)...

Isn't this all a bit 'off topic'?
