| In article , Tony Morgan writes Any suggestions for top quality mini dv tapes,durability,degredation,re-record etc.Which is best? I always recommend (and use) Sony Excellence and Sony Premium. Is there a camcorder specific question here, I've got a JVC, will JVC tapes work better, Tony suggests Sony but is that in a Sony camcorder, as a newbie to D.V. should we use tapes from our camera manufacturer or is this hype? Is there a camcorder specific question here, I've got a JVC, will JVC tapes work better, Tony suggests Sony but is that in a Sony camcorder, as a newbie to D.V. should we use tapes from our camera manufacturer or is this hype? A miniDV tape is a miniDV tape, whatever. And the compatibility of a tape with a particular make of camcorder has nothing to do with the name on their lids. Like a lot of things in life, IMHO, you get what you pay for. It beats me when someone saves up and pays maybe two week's money or more for a camcorder, then spends much time searching for the very cheapest tapes that they can find. Worse, some of these folk buy, maybe, five tapes a year saving themselves about £10 in a year by buying cheap tapes. What I can tell you with certainty is that I've had my TRV-30 for nearly two years, used it a lot, but never have cleaned the heads but they (and the rest of the transport mechanism) is clean and debris-free. Having said that, I don't use each tape a lot because (after cleaning up/discarding the crappy shots) I archive all my original shots back to tape, and also archive my movie "masters" on miniDV tape. A friend (who also uses his camcorder a lot) buys the cheapest tapes and needs to run a cleaning tape as well as use a cotton-bud every 3 months. -- Tony Morgan http://www.camcord.info |

| As an appendix to the other excellent advice here (aka Siny rules!)... You should avoid mixing tape brands (or really tape manufacturers - Fuji make many of the brands out there). The reason to stick to one "brand" is that there are a number of different lubricants in use, and there is a theory that mixing these may cause more debris around the heads and drive mechanism. From what I have read, you should definitely avoid mixing tapes with "wet" and "dry" lubricants. The "dry" lubricated tapes, supposedly the best to use in humid environments, are found only (?) in Panasonic high-end DV tapes (Panasonic Master Series, or MQ tapes).
