Is it possible to extract sound from a mpeg file or files in a viedo_ts
folder please and if so, how should I proceed....?

I do it with Adobe Premiere Elements.

There's probably some freeware program that does it.

Most video editing programs have functions for exporting the audio.

DVDx is pretty good at doing this :
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvdx/

You would normally end up with a bunch of AC3 audio files at the end
of the process, as well as the video content (which you can discard)

There are loads of free demux tools available for MPEGs. For a DVD, just use
DVD Decryptor in IFO mode, on the "Stream processing" tab, enable it, and
just enable the soundtracks you want. You also need to select "demux"
