Default Simple to use free or inexpensive remaking software?

"All" I want to do is a simple editing of DVDs that I record from TV on my
new Panasonic DVD recorder and then burning new DVD after edit. Recorder can
record and read both +RW and -RW discs (in addition to RAM). By a simple
editing I mean just deleting some extra recorded video at the start and end
of a timer recorded program. If I could simply delete adverts then that
would be an advantage but not essential.
Is there easy to use software that does it all in one integrated software?

thanks

I've wondered this: the ability to make a DVD from either another DVD or an
MPEG in the minimum time would be very useful when you're just removing top,
tail and adverts.

Is there any software that will simply remake the frames around the edits
and leave the rest of the file untouched, to avoid the delay of
uncompressing each frame and then recompressing it at possibly a different
compression ratio?

Am I right in believing that DVD VOB files are modified MPEG files with some
data interleaved or rearranged? If you don't recompress but choose to use
the same compression as in the original source VOB/MPEG, does that speed up
the process of generating VOBs? Can any software do this as a way of
speeding up the generation of the VOBs?

If you use DVD-RAM to record you will only ever have a single file
VR_MOVIE.VRO to edit which avoids the 1GB split of titles into .VOB
files. You will, however, need to buy a DVD drive for your PC that
reads DVD-RAM disks though - these drives are now cheap and widely
available, NEC make good ones. Buy the caddyless, single-sided RAM
disks, not the 9GB double-sided products (which don't fit the PC
drives).

You can also erase individual titles on DVD-RAM without having to
reformate the disc, and in my experience you will have far fewer
failures/problems compared with using either DVD-RW or DVD+RW disks.

On the subject of editing, see my comments on Womble's products in the
other thread under your post.

I find the subject of files generated by DVD recorders rather confusing. If
you can please have a look at my posting Editing DVD questions here dated
29th October. Is there any simple guide anywhere fro me to read?
If I use RAM discs would it not be the case that some simple editing is
possible on the recorder itself? The reason for not using DVD/RAM discs is
that they are not compatible with standard DVD players.
Thanks
