A result of the usual commercial disagreements in the industry. Remember VHS & Betamax? :-) Whether it is important to use one or the other depends on your drive. Modern drives mostly don't care, but earlier ones were specified for one or other format. Normaly - where the drive doesn't care - the best type to use is -RW, as these are (very marginaly) more compatable, and slightly cheaper.
