| Is there any reason why I can't simply copy an avi file to a DVD as a data copy? (Just to back it up). For some reason it tells me it can't be done but I don't know whether it's my DVD writer that's playing up or not |

Are you sure that you are setting your writing software to DATA and not DVD-VIDEO? |

What's the error message?
