I've an item with a .wmv file extension that I wish to edit, I found that
this is easily achieved using Power Producer 2 Gold, however after editing
when I try and save it In the original .wmv format the only option given
appears to be as some kind of in house .PPP file.

Can anyone please tell me how I can simply edit a .wmv and save it in the
same format?.. and if needs be preferably with a freeware download if at all
possible, TIA.

Have you tried Windows Movie Maker (get the free update to v2,
if you haven't already) which comes with XP?
Also Windows Media Encoder (also free from MS) is another
option.

Thanks Rob, unfortunately I'm stuck in a bit of a time warp as I'm still
using Windows 2000, perhaps I'll have to think about upgrading.

I think Windows Media Encoder works under 2000:

but the editing functions (use Windows Media File Editor in Utilities
folder) is a bit basic.
XP Pro is a bit better behaved with media stuff, but whether that's
worth upgrading for, only you can decide! I'll be sticking with it
for a long time, as I also did with 2000 but eventually needed s/w
that only ran on XP..

According to my limited research, Power Producer makes VCDs or DVD videos
using the standard MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 configurations for these formats.

When you save a PPP file, you're really just saving the Power Producer
project. The PPP file is not a viewable media file, it is what you load into
Power Producer to revisit your edit if necessary. It's on page 10 of the
manual I just downloaded. Your source material and the project together
allow you to make a viewable disc.

Power Producer in itself (from what I can see) cannot produce WMV files. If
you really don't want to follow Rob's advice and re-do your edits in Windows
Movie Maker, I'd suggest you use PP to burn a high-quality DVD of your edit.
Then, obtain one of the many freeware tools to rip the DVD back to an MPEG
file (it might be possible to do this straight to the hard drive from within
PP - you'll have to read up on it). Then, you can use Windows Media Encoder
(a free download from Microsoft) to turn it back into a WMV file. According

WME works on Win2K.

It's not ideal, as you're compressing to a different intermediate format,
but you have to balance that with the need to re-edit in a different
program.

Generally with editing programs when you "save" you are saving a project
file or in otherwords an EDL or editing decision list. My guess is that is
what your ppp files are - just as in Womble they produce wbp files - to
actually save your work in a recognised video format like wmv or avi or mpg
you need to "Export" your work not "Save"

Thanks for everyones help, problem 'kind of sorted'... I first tried to
download the Microsoft editor from the link that Rob posted, but was
informed that my operating system was deficient in some way.

However after downloading and installing couple of 'things' from the links
supplied by G Hardy, the original editor and convertor then installed
themselves without any problem.

So far I've found that by 'burning' the original edited .wmv programme as an
mpg into a folder instead of onto a disc and then using the downloaded MS
wave converter to convert it back into a .wmv file works OK.

My original quest was was to (simply ) cut a section out of a .wmv file
and upload it with a 'watchable' picture quality onto Picasa 2, which
subsequent tests have shown works reasonably well considering the small file
size.

I'm still using the 'Power Producer' editing tool because it's so simple
(even for me!) i.e. mark in and mark out the section I don't want and then
click on an icon with the pair of scissors on it, job done, the segment of
the clip which is left is the edited bit that I wish to keep.

However I still haven't been able to make head nor tail of the editor
supplied in the Windows download, even after reading the instructions in the
help guide I'm still rather confused, perhaps it's me.. yes I'm sure it is!

Glad everything worked out in the end. Often, it's possible, but difficult,
to do the job you need with the tools you have. Although there are several
other tools available that would make it easier or yield better results, the
cost (in money and/or time learning) isn't justified by the other factors
involved - primary among which is the frequency you'll need to do the job.
(e.g. There's no point buying £300 of editing software for a task you'll
only ever do once and will only end up on the web, even though the program
you already DO have available will make that task harder.)
