Wouldn't that be using the PC (on-board) sound card though?....
Yes unless there is a PCI sound card then it would use that

But the OP was asking if there was a way of NOT using the sound
card... Duh!

ok Plug his hi fi into his camcorder. record the sound and the
transfer it to his PC using firewire or USB.
Even if the devise he has can and I think they can have a sound
source plugged into the red and white phone sockets and converted
to digital by the devises it will still need to be recorded by the
soundcard

I give up!... :~(

Good Idea.

Look, any of the analog to digital capture devices will want
some sort of analog video signal as well as the audio. (Some
can live without the audio.) But they don't care what the
video is, feed it anything that runs as long as the audio you
want to capture. If your capture device lets you capture to
Elementary Streams (ES) you can have your audio file right
away. Otherwise you may have to demux the capture file.

Most capture devices let you set at least some of the
parameters for both the audio and video. Things like
sample frequency and bitrate, at least, often much more.

Luck;
Ken

I am not aware of any application that will record only the audio
portion of a DV stream. Perhaps others do?

Well, Premiere Pro 2 for one. In the 'capture' 'logging' window in the top
right pull down select 'audio' instead of 'audio and video'.

I don't have it here, but this may well indicate that Premiere Elements does
it as well.

Yes, of course. But I was assuming the OP wanted something
simpler and more audio-oriented. Like Audition or Audacity, etc.

I have a Canopus Twinpact DV capture device and also a Pinnacle 500-USB
video capture device. They both work fine for capturing video with
audio but is there a way to make windows use these devices as audio
recording devices only? ie: without the video? (kind of like using it
as a sound card).

As you've stated the question, no, not that I know of.

Neither device appears as a sound device in Control Panel/Sounds and
Audio devices but maybe there's a way to use them as such?

Again, not that I know of, but if you're feeding analog audio and
analog video (either live or from a pre-taped source) into the Canopus
and the Canopus is digitizing/capturing these analog feeds and putting
a DV signal out its FireWire port and you've got that FireWire port
connected to a FireWire port on your computer, it's quite easy to draw
a graph in the Microsoft Filter Graph Editor program (graphedt.exe)
which takes the incoming datastream and saves just the audio portion
to your HDD as an LPCM-encoded .wav file.

I used to record radio programs on a DVDR.

I set the DVDR to record from Line In. I connected my VCR's video to
its video line-in terminal and my receiver's audio to its audio line-in
terminals. It wouldn't record without the video.

I used timed macros on a Pronto remote control to turn on and tune the
VCR and the receiver at the desired time.

For the video, I chose the program guide channel, partly because I
didn't care what I recorded on video, but mainly because that channel
has an on-screen clock - it was a pretty handy guide to the audio
portion :-)
