| Hi there, I've got birds nest at the roof of my house. I would like to install a web cam before birds come back and transmit live picture though my website. What prerequisites do I need it order to succeed and how much roughly it would cost me? I assume I would need a proper web cam, which could stand bad weather and temperature changes. The place where birds have a nest is quite dark as well, so probably it would be good to have one with a light or something? The second thing is how to stream ( with a good rate, at least 1 frame a sec ) the picture from the camra through my website? Do I need a specific hosting? What else would I need to do in order to succeed with my plan? Birds are coming soon! Need help! Thanks, Adam |

The webcam etc. is the least of your worries, I suggest that you post your question to a web authoring group, you should also connect your ISP and domain host (if different to your ISP) about what they require / allow. Until you know if you can / are allowed to stream media via your IP connection anything else is of a secondary importance ATM. -- Jerry - on an different NNTP server. Someone managed to break the other one! |

For the camera, you could google for ethernet (network) webcams - specifically using "Power over ethernet". That would reduce the cabling to a single cable for the camera which can withstand quite a long cable run. Most webcams are USB and can only have a couple of metres cabling between them and the PC. A POE ethernet camera would supply both the power and the connectivity to get the image to your PC, in some cases it would also run its own web server which you could tunnel out through your router to the internet. Examples of these adpaters and cameras might be like : http://www.think4.com/batteries_powe...sr805446a.html http://www.gadget-spot.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=POE12 http://www.action-electronics.com/ipcameras.htm You would also want an exterior housing, which should be 100% waterproof. Otterbox are typical manfacturers for weatherproof equipment cases : http://www.otterbox.com and may be able to produce one close to your design requirements. The second thing is how to stream ( with a good rate, at least 1 frame a sec ) the picture from the camra through my website? Do I need a specific hosting? It depends. It mainly depends on the camera type. It also depends on how many viewers at a time during the day - remember there may be viewers 24/7 if you have the location lit by infrared. In general, 1fps can be arranged by finding a camera which does FTP upload of still images to a website - live streaming of moving images is more demanding and might require some type of "reflector" or in extreme usage, a true media server such as Darwin Streaming Server (from Apple). What else would I need to do in order to succeed with my plan? Birds are coming soon! Need help! I think you might start planning now, for next year - consider this one a dry run and test some of the concepts with yourself and friends ? Perhaps you could archive some video onto the website so people remain engaged till next time.
