Hi All

Before I download loads of free trial software, can anyone suggest a good
tool for doing the above?
I'm using Premiere Elements at the moment (it works, but it's slow).
This isn't a DRM question BTW.
Thanks.

Windows Movie Maker2!

Import the clips, place on the time-line, make movie and select the
output format you want, job done (works quite well IMO).

Although my PC says it has MM2.1, the only avi output available converts a
300Meg file into a 10Gig one!

WinAVI Video Converter

Thanks.
I got a demo, but it converted a 300Meg WMV into a 129k avi! No errors
given. Obviously it didn't work.
I did, however, run the WMV through a friend's AVS Video Convertor which
worked quick and flawlessly.

It's probably saving the AVI in uncompressed form (ie not using a
codec.) This is actually a Good Thing in a way, as you can now
edit the AVI without degrading it further as happens if saved with
a 'lossy' codec (most codecs are lossy) and then edited.
Once you've edited it, you can then save (export) the edited version
in whatever playback format you prefer (eg WMV, MPEG2/4, DivX
etc etc.)
You've discovered the only downside - uncompressed AVI's require
huge amounts of disk space.

IMO AVS Video Tools is the very best bundle of video conversion and
handling programs.. I'd say its the best investment that I've made. It
allows conversions between:
AVI (DivX, XviD, etc.), DV AVI, MP4 (inc. Sony PSP and Apple iPod), WMV,
3GP, 3G2, QuickTime (MOV, QT), SWF, DVD, VOB, VRO,MPG, MPEG 1,2,4, DAT,
VCD, SVCD, ASF, ASX, MJPEG, H.263, H.264, Real Video (RM, RMVB), DVR-MS,
MKV, OGM, FLV. AVS,

It's only a problem if you want it to be, for rendering purposes etc.
one can get away with external USB2 and Firewire drives - it's only
capturing from tape were external drive can become a problem as the
data stream *has* to be real time.

Although I used to advise against it, I've been doing it (USB2 External)
for more than four months now with no problems. Though I had initial
problems, I've now got my network drives (using Netgear SC101) working
on capture. When on-site I also use one of the little external 120Gb
2.5" self-powered USB2 drives on my laptop.
