Default Backing up Hard Drive in DVD player

Hi:

The hard drive in my Panasonic DVD player is showing signs that it may be on
the way out (it's started 'Self-testing' for up to five minutes before it
will let me view it).

Were this the hard drive on my computer, I'd be backing it up like crazy;
what's the recommended action with the hard drive in a DVD player? I don't
fancy putting 80 hours of movies onto DVDs.

Can the hard drive be removed and backed up somewhere before it's repaired or
replaced? What I'm scared of is my taking the machine to the repairer who
will format the hard drive, or otherwise destroy the data while he's
repairing it.

Any thoughts?

Martin S Taylor

P.S. Can anyone recommend a repairer in SE London or West Kent?

Might be better to post the question to the news:uk.tech.digital-tv
group, this group is more concerned to do with content creation rather
than content viewing...

I don't think the hard drive of a DVD recorder is intended for long-term
storage. My Panasonic user guide says exactly that. I once asked a
similar question, about de-fragmenting a DVD HD to improve performance.
The consensus was that it's not as necessary as with a pc hard disc. The
best way to improve performance is to format the hard disc, i.e. delete
all remaining files. I'm afraid that this WOULD involve transferring
anything you want to keep on to disc, either CD-R or CD-RAM.
