Default DVD recorder questions

I am going to buy:
1. a 15" BRAVIA 4:3 LCD TV with Integrated Digital Tuner + PC Input
2. a 160 GB HDD DVD Recorder with integrated digital TV tuner.

1. If I connect my VHS system to the DVD recorder, will I be able to convert
directly my VHS tapes into digital or will I need a special software?

2. Is the DVD recorder strong enough to be placed directly under the (small)
LCD TV?

As the DVD recorder has its own integrated digital TV tuner, I suppose that
I'll be able to record a programme while I am watching another one at the
same time?
