Default Adding text to video

I would like to add text to a video. This could be a few frames with only
text on or text added to the video as it runs.

I don't want to spend any money so I was wondering if any shareware exists.

Hi Wallace,
I think you're secretly an Adobe salesman. Asking for progressively more
complex features for free until we tell you - "Sorry, you have to pay for
that particular feature.............."
:-)

Don't know what your output video is gonna be for - but have you looked at
Windows Movie Maker (in XP) or Free version of Avid? Providing you're not
getting too ambitious, a lot of the freebies can do some quite useful stuff.

Assuming that your editing software does have this ability....

If you have a image manipulating program (ie. PSP, Gimp or gulp
Photoshop) you could experiment at making transparent captions and
use the 'logo' insertion filter in VirtualDub.
