How many tapes are you after, 1 or 100(+)?

Also is there such a thing as a 'digital 8 tape', wasn't the idea
behind the format that it would use existing Hi8 tapes?....

There weren't any when I bought my D8 camcorder (DCR-TRV210E). The
manual instructed to use Hi8 tapes.

Since then, I've seen some Digital8 labelled tapes in the shops but it's
probably just a marketing gimmick.

You mean digital, not D8, there is no such thing as D8 format
although there is a D9 and thus referring to the digital 8mm consumer
format as 'D8' might get confused (on paper / screen) for the
professional D9 format!

[1] JVC Digital-S, the tape is 1/2" and the cassettes are the same
size as the (S)VHS format.

Considering that even Sony's Digital8 logo is based on the letter "D"
and the number "8": http://web.telia.com/~u57102366/bildegif/d8.gif, I
don't think it is an unreasonable colloquial abbreviation for the
format.

Yes, lets not allow the facts to get in the way of the marketing....

In the context of the thread, someone thinking that digital8 is the
same as the (non existent D8 format) might miss read a list of tapes
and order D9 tapes thinking that they are suitable.
