Default How much space does DV take up on a Computer?

I have some MiniDV tapes of home movies that I'd like to get onto my
computer to edit before I burn a couple of DVDs to give family members
as gifts for Birthdays and Christmas etc.

I am just wondering approximately how much space in GB would a 1 hour
MiniDV tape take up on my system?

Cheers

John

I have a Sony Digital8 Handycam (DCR-TRV280) that captures really good
quality. A 10 minute birthday party took up 4GB of my hard drive space.
So 1 hour would take 24GB of hard drive space. I also use MiniDVs.

But, if you don't have that much space to use then you probably
couldn't video edit. I just directly record them to a VHS tape on my
TV, or you could get a DVD video recorder on your TV.

Of course, if you have a 250GB hard drive, but that's just an estimate.
20 seconds of video uses 200MB if it matters.

Don't forget that you need around twice that space per GB though,
space for the 'capture' (file transfer) and then space for the
render, preferably the system drive should not be used.

Something is wrong with your setup, then.

DV video is a shade over 3½ MB per second, which equates to just over 72 MB
for 20 seconds or (as Tony said) just over 12 GB for an hour. Even if you
factor in the confusion between decimal and binary GB, and assume DV type 2
(which has an additional audio stream) you're still not supposed to be
anywhere near 24 GB for an hour.

If you're factoring in workspace too, you need to mention that, so the OP
can assess its relevance to him. Of all the footage I shoot, I keep about a
sixth, so even if I capture 100 GB, I've still enough for editing and a DVD
build if I have 30 GB free after capture - but only just.

Maybe it depends on some factors. The tapes that I'm getting from GL2 1-hr
DV tape are eating about 15 GBytes on hard drive. I also know that same DV
tapes are used in the high definition devices. Just wondering how much space
is required to get one tape on the hard drive? Did anybody in this NG try to
do that?

if you just capture from the hdv recording on the dv tape , it's still
approx 13GB per hour in mpeg2 format.

if you capture using an intermediate codec , it can be anything from
13Gb upwards.

canopus version equates to approx 60GB per hour , which allows frame
accurate editing.

Ok, I see, it should be PAL. Yes, in NTSC it takes about 15.

Thanks for this info about HDTV.

Not sure about HD (hence replying to this message instead of the one two
posts down) but bear in mind that PAL DV and NTSC DV should be almost
exactly the same data rate. Uncompressed, they ARE exactly the same data
rate.

Is it not the same for HD?
