| I will be buying my first digital camcorder soon. I have been checking various models on the internet and narrowed it down to two camcorders which are within my budget. 1. Panasonic NV GS300 http://www.camerastore.com.au/Panaso...00-details.htm and 2. Canon MVX250i. http://www.canon.com.au/products/cam...o/mvx250i.html I like the Panasonic because it has 3 CCDs but only a 10X optical zoom whereas the Canon has an 18X zoom which I also like. I would appreciate comments on these cameras or anything better around the same price. Thanks Andy |

| I can't really comment on the Canon, but the Panasonic would be a great choice. I was recently looking for a basic camcorder and after much research ended up with a Panasonic PV-GS36. It is a single CCD model but from a control and feel standpoint is probably similar to the 3 CCD models. The video quality is excellent from my single CCD model. The build quality is also very nice especially for a relatively inexpensive unit. What sold me on Panasonic was that, even in their most basic line, it is possible to work the camcorder manually. In actual usage, this camcorder has exceeded my expectations to the point that if I were to upgrade today, I would immediately consider the 3 CCD models in the NV line. The value appears to be outstanding. While I suppose it is possible that a good single CCD unit could outperform a 3 CCD unit, my research and experience tells me that the Panasonic 3 CCD models are very good performers. The increase in video quality more than offsets the shorter zoom of the Panasonic over the Canon. With regard to zoom, some consumer grade camcorders offer optical zoom that is of limited usefulness for portable use without a tripod. A 10X zoom should be fairly hand holdable. If you truly need greater zoom there are many teleconverters on the market which are of decent quality and relatively inexpensive which can double or triple your zoom. Again, with all else being equal, I would opt for the unit that offers the best video quality. More oftern than not, the 3CCD unit will offer more video quality and color accuracy than a single CCD model. Andy wrote: I will be buying my first digital camcorder soon. | Btw, the box with GS36 has the words Digital Palmcoder - what's that really? The label at the store has the following: Digital Palmcoder Camcorder. Is that a kind of joke or there is some hidden meaning? ![]() Just D. wrote in message ups.com... I can't really comment on the Canon, but the Panasonic would be a great choice.
