If I were you I'd either stick with the SE version or spend tens of
thousands on a full-spec Avid system used by the studios. Or perhaps
something in between.

;o)

You need to tell us what you want it to do.

Indeed and what his present / future system spec is, no point
advising a full Avid Adrenalin system if the system can barely run
Studio 10...

That's terribly ambiguous !

Hint : Wouldn't it be better to post your editing reqiurements and
your PC spec, then loads of people can chip in with something which
pretty much precisely matches your present and future needs.

Can you afford Vegas or Premiere? Maybe Pinnacle offer good
products, but all the Pinnacle video editors I've ever seen have been
toys.

Okay all valid responses guys, please excuse my ignorance and lack of
detail, this is all very new.

My aim is to transfer family videos to DVD noth much more ambitious at this
stage.

Bit of basic editing and puting background music on

Also would like to be able to convert some footage to managable sizes for
Web use

My PC is a P4 3 gig with 1000 ram, may be upgrading within the next year

I have absolutely no experience in Video work, but have quite decent
knowledge of photography
and use Photoshop CS for that side

My suggestion is that you download the free trial of EditStudio 5 from:
http://www.puremotion.com/editstudio/

The trial gives you full functionality, but puts a small logo on your
video.

If you're happy with it, it's going to cost you £100 to unlock it so
that the logo doesn't appear.

You can also download the manual if you wish (to read up before you
start) from:
http://www.puremotion.com/downloads/esuserguide500.zip

I went through Pinnacle until version 9 and then stopped after terrible
reports of version 10.

I now use Premiere Elements which works fine for me and cost me £69
combined with Photoshop Elements 4 and then £20 back from Adobe. It
makes DVDs OK too. It works fine for me and no great outlay.

My twopenneth anyway

I'd second the reco for Adobe Premiere Elements - I do basically what
you've described above and I've found it absolutely brilliant.

You can download a demo from Adobe, which allows you to run through the
tutorial, but has DVD burning disabled.
