| Many years ago I made some home movies with a super 8 cine camera. Subsequently I copied these movies to VHS video tape using an analogue camcorder. Later on I dubbed the VHS video to DVD via a DVD recorder. I now would like to capture the video from the DVD to my hard disk so that I can do some editing with Pinnacle studio and thereby produce a much more professional compendium of all the old home movies on a new DVD. My question is how can I capture the DVD contents to hard disk, presumably in AVI format, so that the clips can be recognised by Pinnacle Studio? |

Look at the DVD in explore the vob files should be copied to the HD then change the Extn VOB to mpg and Now you can edit them |

I've just tried with one of the *.vob files and Pinnacle Studio informs me that I need to get an advanced codec for £6.00. I'm working on it. Is this what you would expect? |

If you dont have the MPEG 2 Codec possibly yes But I thought it was Included |

As you want tp re-edit, you will probably get a better result by re-capturing them on your present computer directly into your video-editing program than by 'ripping' them back from the DVD you made, which will be in MPEG2 (compressed) format. Cut-only editing on MPEG2 video streams is lossless, but anything else will reduce quality noticeably. HTH -- Rob |

Trouble is I don't have analogue capture on my current computer. The quality of the original cine was pretty dire (by today's standards) so I don't expect the MPEG2 compression made a lot of difference. |

Several months ago I purchased a little Tevion USB2 dongle from Aldi for £29.29. This enables me to capture and make DVDs via the SVideo output of my Humax Freeview STB, it also has a composite input which allows me to record from a video-recorder, the software also includes Power Producer 2 gold, which along with the Tevion software has some basic editing facilities. |

Studio is a little fussy about which mpeg files it will open - most other editing software will open those files directly without making you buy an extra codec. Cheers. James. |
