| I have recently bought a Canon MV830i and would like to copy my video footage to my PC, and then burn to CD. There appears to be nothing in the manual or on the accompanying CD (Canon Digital Video Software) telling me how to do this (it's all about using the USB cable to dump stills), can someone enlighten me please? TIA tim |

| Do you have XP with MovieMaker, and a Firewire (DV) cable attached to the camera ? Turn on the camera in playback mode, start MovieMaker and see if you can get anywhere from there. Connect the Firewire port on the camera to a Firewire port on your computer. Run a video-editing program. Windows Movie Maker (supplied with Windows XP) will do. Put your camera in playback mode and follow the instructions in the program to capture video. It's so simple that the manual can't really say much more than "you can dump video down a Firewire link". |

Canon don't seem to make manuals freely available online, unlike many other manufacturers. But I found a spec sheet which includes: Connectivity PC connectivity is fully supported. Use the DV in/out connecter to upload and download your digital movies and digitise videotape with the built-in converter. JPEGs and up to 60 minutes of Motion JPEG are stored direct on MMC or SD memory cards for upload via USB. This confirms that digital movies use the Firewire port (they call it the DV in/out). If your computer doesn't have a Firewire port, you can add one quite cheaply. I don't think the famous £15-including-cable deal from Dabs is still available :-) But you shouldn't have to pay much more. Don't be seduced by a £80 bundle including a low-end video editor. It won't be any better than Windows Movie Maker. One warning. You're very limited in your scope for dv editing unless you have a reasonably new and powerful computer. |

Indeed, but shame they don't bother to put that in it (or at least don't put it anywhere obvious, as I haven't found it to date!) Thanks for answering the question folks, I now have to trot out and get a Firewire card ;o) tim |

Pity Canon don't let us download manuals. Your camera will have the little 3-pin Firewire socket. Don't forget to get a suitable cable or adaptor. Thanks for answering the question folks, I now have to trot out and get a Firewire card ;o) tim |
