SCART to firewire? I have a firewire connection in my PC and a pile of VHS
tapes I'd like to transfer over to my PC for later editing. I suppose some
electronic gadgetry would be needed in between?

Yes, it's called a Analogue to DV converter, many companies produce
them, Canopus being one of the better, Datavideo is another.

The device you want is an External PC Video Digitiser. You are right to look
out for a firewire version, but most will be USB 2.0. Don't get a USB 1/1.1
as these are not capable of full screen digitising.

Only USB if you are either to stupid to Google for analogue to DV
converters or to much of a cheapskate....

yeah a canopus ADVC110 should be the right thing. You'll need an adapter to
convert the scart plug to 3 phono's (audio L, audio R, and video) but
they're dirt cheap.
