| Has any one ou there had any success connecting a Sony DCR-HC40E mini DV camera to a Windows XP computer using firewire cable, I have tried without success, Window says my firewire card and controller are working ok but what ever programme I use to try and capture video I get a message saying "no video capture device present" There is probably some simple procedure to get the computer to recognise the camera but for the life in me I cannot work out what I need to do. I can use USB no problem but would rather get the firewire working to gain on quality. Any clues please? Thanks Colin |

Holding your camcorder in the normal way, your right-hand thumb should fall on a switch. In the centre position it is OFF (Chg), in the up position it says CAMERA (that you shoot your video with), and the bottom position is VCR - all labelled quite clearly.......... -- Tony Morgan http://www.camcord.info |

But windoesxp detects my HC42 as soon as I turn it on, and before I select VCR mode. |

| Thanks all you folks for the replys, I have read the manual numerous times and understand the camera main switch and have tried again today with a new good quality firewire cable so I am beginning to think that I may have a problem with my Firewire card and may just have to go out and buy a new one to at least eliminate that possibility as from what you say windows XP should spot the camera as soon as it is connected and turned on regardless of what editing software I am going to use. Before you go to the trouble (and expense) of doing that, I'd suggest you go into the Control Panel, find the Hardware section, and delete the driver. Then reboot and allow Windows to re-install the Microsoft driver. -- Tony Morgan http://www.camcorder.info |

Just to confirm that when your original phrase "Window says my firewire card and controller are working ok" means that you can see a host entry in device manager under IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers. regards Stuart www.mckears.com |
