I want to buy a camcorder and film a wedding to send to the USA. I'm in the UK I use canopus procoder to convert from PAL to NTSC. I always convert at the avi stage , not the mpeg2 stage in dvd production. Gary MacKenzie Audio Visual Technician / Video Editor |

Do you convert the PAL AVI to NTSC MPEG-2, or encode an NTSC AVI? If the latter, do you go from DV PAL to DV NTSC or uncompressed NTSC? I only ask because I need to do a one-off and although (in this instance) quality is not uppermost, it would be nice to get it looking its best. |

PAL dv avi on timeline export timeline as a finished dv avi (PAL) feed that avi to procoder and get a ntsc dv avi. then feed that back into procoder and convert the ntsc dv avi into a ntsc dvd compliant mpeg2 file. It's two passes through procoder , but should be better quality and less time than going from pal dv avi straight to ntsc mpeg2. I will however soon be doing the final part the following way. NTSC dv avi from dv tape in a dsr11 deck to a panasonic standalone dvd-ram recorder. That will create a ntsc dvd with ac3 soundtrack. I can then add a menu to it using panasonic dvd-moviealbum-se or ulead dvd disk factory , and make copies from that. Gary MacKenzie Audio Visual Technician / Video Editor |

I've be inclined to do all my editing in my video editor of choice, then write-back to AVI (on the HD). Then use AVI2DVD (setting it to convert from PAL to NTSC) after pre-installing the Ace Codec Megapack. -- Tony Morgan |

Then use AVI2DVD (setting it to convert from PAL to NTSC) after pre-installing the Ace Codec Megapack. I should perhaps have added that AVI2DVD gives you *both* an ISO file for direct burning to DVD, and a MPEG-2 file (sans audio) plus an AC3 file. With the MPEG-2+AC3, you can use your choice of DVD program to introduce a menu system. If you don't want menus, then the ISO file is used. -- Tony Morgan |
