Default canon zoombrowser not sending movie clips

hi all
I have WIN XP. I have a digital camera Canon Power Shot A40
It uses the software Zoom Browser.
I used to be able to e-mail my 20 second movie clips that my camera had
taken.
They are stored in their own folder.
I can play them to watch on my computer, but noone can open the attachment
anymore.
I have tried sending them from Zoombrowser and also sending as an
attachment. the attachment's file ext. is mvi.avi
What am I doing wrong. had no problem on my old WIN ME computer, but I now
have XP. Could that be the problem?
Please help I like sending the little movie clips of the grandkids to my
family members.
Thanks in advance.

Most cameras compress the video to save space on the devices memory.
The compression method used is often a type called 'M-JPEG' short for
Motion JPEG (similar to a series of still photos).

taken.
They are stored in their own folder.

Anybody wanting to watch the clip as-is will need the M-JPEG decoder
software on their machine. It's not actually that easy to find
something that'll install it for free so they can view your video.

So my recommendation would be to convert it to another format.

Nothing really, keep reading ...

Since you can ~read~ the files on your computer it's likely you have a
decoder that XP can use to convert them to another format. Your
simplest option might to investigate Windows Movie Maker, it comes on
XP (and you should have the most recent version from windows update)
or you can get the latest version from here :

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...viemaker2.mspx

The saved video files will be windows media format, and most people
with a PC can read them - some Apple Macs can too.

Other available options include loading the file into VirtualDub,
which has it's own M-JPEG decoder, then re-saving as a new AVI video
but using different compression : You should have MPEG4 video
available as an option under the Video - Compression menu in VDub.

You can get VDub from here : http://www.virtualdub.org/

If you prefer a pay-for tool, Apple's Quicktime Pro can open and save
video in a wide range of formats : http://www.apple.com/quicktime -
it may be worth it because there are a wide variety of options
available, though many of them appear hidden at first glance. The
newest version 7 supports H264 video which gives excellent visual
results for a given file size - BUT the viewer needs Quicktime 7
installed to see them.

Hmm, well you wouldn't have had movie maker on the Win ME computer
cause it's XP only ;-) Try it, you'll probably find it quite handy to
have.

The problem is that things move on, and XP doesn't come with some of
the older style encoder / decoder ("codec") software. So even if you
installed exactly the same program, it's likely that the 'default'
settings have to be different for saving files - and whatever was the
default before is no longer available to the program on XP.

The problem I'm having is knowing anything about what Zoom Browser
does when it compresses the video to AVI, but I'm prepared to bet
something changed in the settings when you installed it on XP compared
to the ME system you had before,
