Default How to convert video to dvd ?

What is the best way to convert video to dvd, but at the same time
to use the least storage space. One option is to use a dvd recorder
on the high quality mode, but then we have only 1-2 hours on the
dvd while the video can be 3 hours. What should I do to increase
dvd recording time without effecting the quality. Should I record
on high resolution, and then use divx to increase space?
