| Hi All, Is there any obvious disadvantage in using LP? Is the digital quality digitally worse in some way? Lower res or bit depth? If its a digital signal and it works then why use SP? Are there subtle disadvantages in using LP. For example less reliable or more likely to go wrong ? I could imagine that there are "errors" when using the digital media and that these "errors" are covered up. LP could have more of these. This would be similar to Audio CD where data can be lost but the CD still plays. There are "Music quality" CD-Rs that are not error free in normal operation. As the signal is uncompressed the reading will not go wrong if the signal is not digitally perfect. However quality will be compromised. My impression would be that technology has advanced so the LP is now possible, but it was not possible when the SP standard was set up. Should I use LP or SP ? Ta BB |

The main disadvantage is that an LP tape is not guaranteed to be readable on any camcorder other than the one it was recorded on. In fact it often won't. The quality is down as well, but not significantly. There can be very few occasions when you need to shoot continuously for more than 60 minutes, so personally I can't see any valid reason for using LP at all. Worse though, if you're camcorder goes belly-up then all the shots you have recorded in LP might not be recoverable - which for me is a sound reason to never record in LP. -- Tony Morgan |
