Default Converting VHS to DVD

Hi

Hope this is an appropriate group for this question.
I want to convert some of my videos to dvd using my PC.

Can someone please advise as to what software/hardware I need to buy
for this task?

Any particular make of software/hardware out there that is simple and
straightforward to use?

Im in the UK so PAL will be my format.

Thanks

Generally speaking you need some form of capture hardware and software to
get the actual video onto the PC, you may then need to convert it to MPEG2
(depending on your capture capabilities). At this stage you use some DVD
authoring software to create your DVD project, and finally burn to DVD.

Can someone please advise as to what software/hardware I need to buy
for this task?

Some software allows short cuts on the above. There was a Tevion DVD
Maker at Aldi recently that captured straight into MPEG2 format. You
could then use Nero to create and burn the DVD.

If you really want a simple, no hassles option, consider a living room DVD
recorder. Hook up your VCR player, slap in a blank DVD and record. Job
done and you likely won't be back here because some software component on
your PC doesn't work.

http://www.digitalfaq.com/
has lots of useful information. I bought a Canopus ADVC100 attached it to a
vcr and have converted my 300 odd Videos to DVDs in about 6 months.
Main problem to be careful of with cheap capture cards is the audio and
video get out of sync so after a while you get something like a bad kung fu
movie from the 70s.
Also
http://www.videohelp.com/
has tons of reviews of all sorts of kit.
Hope this all helps

Which version of Nero are you referring to? I've got Version 6.6.0.2 and
it won't convert MPEG-2 to the BUP/IFO/VOB filetype/structure that's
required. It will create the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS directories, and burn
*already* encoded BUP, IFO and VOB files into the VIDEO_TS directory on
DVD disk.

I've got the Winfast DV2000 here :
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...tml?LEA-DV2000

It does cable in/ TV tuner in, and with a fast enough PC can encode
and record direct to DVD from the input with the provided software.

When I say fast enough, mine's a 1.7ghz athlon + 384 meg and it
struggles to keep up with full screen pal (occasional dropouts).

So better check your piggy bank ;-)

The software included is OK if a little odd, but generally it works
well as a PVR too, so you'll be able to watch and record TV or FM
radio with it - and it comes with Ulead software for very basic video
editing and DVD creation, and even 3x firewire inputs. Not bad for £50

Cheers - Neil

That's odd.

I have 6.6.0.0 and it quite happily works with MPEG-2 files. I would have
expected that yours isn't the huge an update over mine...

(Having said that, I haven't tried it with the MPEG-2 output from the Tevion
as Dave R suggests, just DVD-compliant transcodes of DV from CinemaCraft
basic.)

Nero have some weird numbering going on, and their product naming makes it
difficult to track. I think it's Nero Express 6, but ICBW.

Back to the question I asked - does it generate the BUP/IFO/VOB
filetype/structure - or do you have to use something other than (your
version of) Nero?

It's a serious question because I've had a number of requests from
people I know to transfer VHS to DVD for them. I've been reluctant to
help because I have to import into my video editor of choice (Vegas),
then into DVD Architect. It would be a lot easier to go straight from
MPEG-2 to DVD-burn with Nero if a later version than 6.6.0.2 allows it.
