| Some of us still do (audio cassettes done as ADA: recorded on analogue tape, digital mixing and processing, and analogue out to cassette). I haven't seen any "straight to digital" microphones yet, http://www.swee****er.com/store/detail/C01usb |

| FYI: if he REALLY wants to avoid computers (his loss, IMO) TWO miniDV decks with frame accurate editing capability would really be the best idea. Once you go to DVD, you're LOSING quality by virtue of the compression that format requires (MPEG). At least if he works from one deck to another, there's no loss. Once he has a master tape he likes, he can output to a DVD writer if he wants to. Again, in my opinion, he's far better off learning to use a computer. But yes, your example is one of Linear Editing. "Griffo Fooxburr" wrote in message ... Thank you very much for your answers (especially Alpha & C.J.Patten). As the latter says, "often the source of the term is lost in the mists of time", that is why I expected all theese programmes I'm reading about like Premiere, Studio, Xpress, Movie Maker have their counterpart on the Linear Editing side :-) Now I see it's another world, actually... Now I can even find one LE-digital combination: one of my colleagues at work says he doesn't want to do any computer-based editing of his DV footage. He simply wants to transfer everything he captured with his camcorder to a DVD, cutting off some parts. Nothing added, nothing changed. For this purpose he is about to buy a standalone DVD recorder with a firewire input. This would be a good Linear Editing, yet digital, example, right? Thanks again. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Phillipo" I'm new to video editing. I understand NLE stands for Non Linear Editing. I would like to know what this really means. Is there Linear Editing too? Can you provide some examples? Film, scissors, scotch tape. |

Now if only "PTRAVEL" and "Chuck U. Farley" are listening. "PTravel" wrote in message ... I am. What's your point? Are you still insisting that VideoReDo is not an NLE? Ken VideoReDo is an NLE in the same sense that Scenealyzer Live is an NLE -- they can both do cuts edits and re-arrange clips. Putting them in the same category as software that is intended for editing, whether it is something as basic as Microsoft Movie Maker, begs the question of what is meant by "editing." You can do primitive editing in VideoReDo, but it is not an editor in the sense that most people use the term. VideoReDo is fine for what it does (as is Scenealyzer Live), but anyone who wants to do more than simple cuts will have to look at packages intended for the purpose. Telling people that VideoReDo is an adequate substitute for "real" NLE software is, to put it charitably, misleading. As I've told you a number of times, I have no bias against VideoReDo, mpeg capture, or the other tools of which you are so fond -- they are quite useful for specific applications where Premiere or tmpgenc would be overkill. You, on the other hand, seem to regard them as the Swiss Army knife of video -- they don't even begin to come close. "The right tool for the right job." |
