Default Panasonic NVGS50 recording problems

Hi
This is my first post as this is my first camcorder so a complete newbie I
am!
I have bought a Panasonic NVGS50 from a friend. Suddenly it will not record
to film. If I play it back using WinXP native video software all it shows is
the 1st frame running jerkily for about 2 seconds and then nothing.
Oddly it records OK to SD card in MPEG4.

thanks for looking

Laurence

Sounds like you might be using USB and not firewire to transfer from
camcorder to PC.

Without being connected to the PC, does it play back correctly when viewed
on the camera's screen?

Does the tape mechanism make the usual whirry noises?

Have you tried recording onto a new, unused tape?

OK Wally I'll try and get a new tape. Why would that make a difference?
