Default JVC GR-D230 vs Canon MV850i

The Canon is around 150 EUR more (We know it might not work on a UK TV,
that's not an issue as we live in Belgium [1]).

The question we have is that on features they seem about equal, except that
the JVC only has a 10X zoom. Is a longer zoom (considering optical only, of
course) practical anyway?

We're only occasional users so we don't need a top of the range model, but
we're prepared to pay the extra for a better one if it's worth it in the
long run.

Any comments, negative or positive from people who have one or the other (or
both!) would be greatly appreciated.

[1] They do have PAL. Well, kind of.

General advice (which applies to all makes/models) can be seen he
