Default Help required capturing Video from camcorder to PC

Not sure if this is the best or right newsgroup for this, but as I
have looked elsewhere and found nothing, here's hoping.

I have got a Sony Handycam Vision CCD-TRV208E PAL Video Hi8 Camcorder
and I am looking at transferring all the Video that I have on the
tapes onto my PC so that I can put them onto a DVD for a more reliable
storage media.

I would be extremely greatful if anyone could provide me with the
following information.

a) First of all is this possible as I am a complete novice on this
sort of thing although I am quite computer literate

b) What sort of cables and pc hardware/software would best enable me
to do this.

I have quite a bit of stuff that I am desperate to transfer so any
help would be greatly appreciated

hopefully awaiting replies

Essentially, you need two things: A "box" to convert the analogue video
from your camcorder to digital, and a video editor (or other software)
to capture the digital video in you PC.

The "box" can be:

1. A Canopus video converter, costing more than £100. This will
connect via firewire, so you'll also need a firewire card and
(possibly) a firewire cable.

2. A miniDV camcorder that has DV-in. Again here you'll need a
firewire card and cable, as well as a video editor or other
software to capture the digital video.

3. Only mentioned here a few days ago - Aldi were
selling a "Tevion DVD Maker" for £29.99. This provides
a USB2 connection to your PC (you may already have USB2
on your computer - if not you'll have to invest in a
USB2 card).

(1) and (2) above capture as AVI DV files which eat diskspace Whether
hard disk or DVD. at a rate of 3.4MB for each second of video.

(3) comes in as MPEG-2, which is nowhere near as greedy in respect of
diskspace. This would seem to be the best option for you, since you can
save your videos as either SVCDs (on CDs) or as DVDs. Both require
suitable software (most video editors will allow you to do this).

I looked in my local Aldi and there were none of the (3) units left, but
a friend in Bedfordshire tells me his local Aldi still has some in.

I only mention option (2) above in case you're thinking of getting a
digital miniDV camcorder, or are able to borrow one.

I had the same problem, the easiest way to do it is to buy a DVD recorder
which are now replacing video recorders. Better still is to buy a DVD /
hard drive recorder and just pop it under your TV. You can transfer your
tapes onto the hard drive and edit it there very easily via your TV then
burn it to DVD or just transfer it straight to DVD. Make sure your recorder
has a firewire connection as even though you might not be able to benefit
from this connection on your old camcorder you will on modern camcorders.
Recommend you burn the DVD's in -R format as this format is universally
playable on all players.
