Default cheap conversion cards

What would be a cheapish ( 150 ukp max) for a getting some old VHS onto a
computer!
All ideas welcome, is a card or a usb better/ quicker?
Firewire?

Initially the video will be from a VHS machine!

Cheers
Simon

Provide that your computer is up to the job and supports USB2, then the
TeVion VS-USB2800D DVD maker being sold in some Aldi supermarkets for £29.29
might be a cheap and easy way of doing what you want (its pros and cons have
been discussed elsewhere on this NG). It has both SVHS Composite and Stereo
audio inputs, and comes with a couple of software programs for making VCD
and DVDs which also includes some basic editing.

Cheers
Simon

There are loads, depending what price you want to pay and what
resolution you want, ranging from Dabs "SmartCapture - Video Capture PCI
Adaptor" at 18.52 inc VAT, the Belkin "Hi-Speed USB 2.0 DVD Creator" at
around 44 pounds (Dabs price), various Hauppauge cards up to 150 quid or
so. The first two I mentioned claim to do PAL at up to 720x480
resolution, probably adequate for VHS (off-air I use 720x578).

USB2.0 is faster than Firewire, if I remember correctly. Personally I'd
go for USB rather than internal, but that's because I prefer not to
power down my machines and put more hardware in unless necessary (and
modern PCs have loads of USB ports).

Like Ivan, I recently bought the Tevion from Aldi. It seems to work, and
my (admittedly fast) machine can do the MPEG encoding on the fly. USB2
certainly seems to be up to the job, and for £30 it's cheaper than a lot
of capture cards.

Failing that, I do have a Pinnacle DV500 Plus that I'm no longer using. I
was going to ebay it sometime, but if you're interested....

I simply needed to make a lead up that had SCART socket at one end and 3
RCA outputs on the other for the composite video out. These could
probably be bought at Maplin if you don't have one already.
