| Hello! I'm looking for an application (Windows XP + free) that can make indexes of my DV digital video tapes. The functionality I'm looking for is: - Thumbnail-creation of each scene on the DV-tape with display of timestamp. - Adding comments/keywords. - Searching for comments/keywords for easily retrieval of video-clips. - If possible: Batch capture of selected DV-scenes to harddisc. Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance and best regards Morten L.Pedersen |

| I use Scenalyzer. I don't think it's free...I can't recall...but it is effective. Does all that you have asked...and one thing you didn't which I find brilliant. It can scan an hour tape in 5 mins (with a DV out enabled cam) in FF mode so you end up with a 5 minute review of your entire tape. Then I take the output of that and make a low quality, low size copy with something like DrDivx and label the tape and file the same. In this way I have 5 min version of every tape I have ever shot on my HD and at 5Mb each they take up little space what-so-ever, and the size and quality is able to perfectly show me what is on each tape the at the touch of a button. | Hi! Thank you very much. I have downloaded Scenalyzer, and it seems like the only catch in the trial version is a logo on the scene stills - if that's all I can live with that. I'm going to use the weekend to look further in to the program. Furthermore - your suggestion about a 5 min. low size/quality version of the content of each DV-tape sounds good. | snip Yes but you didn't have anything to contribute FIRST :-P It's ok Neil....it's his modus operandi. I've upset him, now I must suffer the slings and arrows of his petulance. :-D. I'm not the only one. Check out the TM question about Bluetooth. Tony asks a completely valid question - Has anyone used Bluetooth on a cam? Jerry responds: Why would anyone want or need to ? (what value? I don't believe the question was, 'Do you think there is a legitimate use for Bluetooth on video camera's?) Perhaps he has problem comprehending questions? Anyway Jerry...lets pretend for a moment that you are a rational level headed person and that you asked only to expand the knowledge of the group....(*crying with laughter*) The beta version I use has this function, but I don't use it. The earlier version I'm not sure about (but I am pretty sure it does exist), but as you have an entire hour compressed down to 5 mins I normally just use an naming convention like 01042005_2304_JerrysASBOhearing_arrest. This gives me the date of the first and last shot and an idea of the content. With only 5 minutes to scroll through and all the taped footage in front of me. I find that more than sufficient. Now...don't you have to get back to writing cross letters to the editor? Hmmm? |

It's not like you've never made alternative suggestions is it? ![]() The only place I've seen a clip 'database' is in Vegas 5 using what are termed 'media bins'. It not only manages captured clips, but imported video as well as stills that have been imported for use in Vegas. The usual clip attributes (including labels) are included, and additionally you can add comments (where you can include keywords). Vegas uses what is termed a 'media pool' which can be configured to contain any number of 'media bins' (aka folders). There is a search facility which is used to find clips based on all the usual attributes as well as a 'keyword search' which looks through the comments for whatever keywords you've identified. Once you've got a search return, you can look at the various identifying elements like media properties, media fx. You also have the option of listing the search returns as views (just like Windows does - icons, list, detail etc). The cost of Vegas precludes its purchase for just getting a database, but for those who are considering an 'all-singing/all-dancing' video editor it's a feature that might be considered when making a choice. I don't know if it's available in the stripped-down Vegas Elements, but I doubt that it is. -- Tony Morgan http://www.camcord.info |
