Default recommend a device for analogue video to PC

can anyone recommend a device to go from video composite to PC? at a
resonable cost (bearing in mind high quality)

Are we looking at a graphic card?other card? or external box?

Perhaps it's worth mentioning that if Pete has (or can get access to) a
miniDV or Digital8 camcorder with DV-in, chances are that the camcorder
can convert analogue-to-digital via firewire.

That's an oxymoron, does he want high quality or not, if he does than
a cheapo USB box from Aldi isn't going to cut the mustard - he'll be
talking anywhere between about 200 to 1500 quid....

Canopus ADVC100 circa 200 GBP or a bit cheaper if you only want to go
from AD (using an internal card). The other option is to go with Tony
Morgan's suggestion and use a DV camcorder and 'pass through'.

The ADS AV/Pyro box is damn good but it's nearing £200 too, but like the
Canopus it's got hardware sound syncing and something the Canopus lacks,
or at least did the last time I checked, and that's Component In and Out
for the analogue side of things. Somewhat better than S-Vid which is
usually the best most of these devices offer. And, yes, it will stoop to
Composite as well.

Regards

Probably showing my ignorance, here, but if high quality was that big an
issue, surely he would be considering something better than composite?

Depends on the source material, but for the consumer getting old VHS tapes
into the PC for editing, the Aldi box is fine.

None of the cameras I have with DV-in are capable of passthrough, but some
time ago I rented a PD-170 that did, so I transferred an old tape to DV for
eventual conversion to DVD (another one of those "round tuit" jobs).

Now I've got the Aldi USB dongle, I can do the same capture again, and see
what comes out the other side. Won't happen before the weekend, though.

Reading this thread with interest, bit new at this but looking to buy
something similar.

There seems to be quite a large jump from "the aldi box" to the next stage
up? Is the difference in quality that great?

I would guess that the canopus ADVC300 if the ideal kit to have (would this
also need a TBC?)

For a lower grade setup, decent VCR, TBC, "aldi box" and then software
filter

am I on the right lines for a basic kit?

IIRC the 300 has a built in TBC, and if you are talking about 'old
well played' VHS or recorded via a cheapo VHS recorder then the
footage could well do with having it's sync etc restored.

A TBC, unless you have one within the playout VCR is probably going to
cost you 200 quid or so, a Canopus 300 doesn't look such a bad deal if
you are always going A D and not dubbing A A, if you don't want to
need a TBC and are burning to disk then and are trying to keep costs
down then it might be better to think in terms of the Analogue version
of Pinnacle Studio bundle.
