Default DV Quality vs Analogue Quality

I'm thinking about buying a DV Camcorder but am not sure if the quality
would be any better than that of an analogue camcorder when watched on a TV.
I would be watching the video on the TV, played through the tape in the
camcorder. When played in this way, would the DV movie, be much better
quality than that of an analogue camcorder?

I've heard that the quality of DV movies degrade when put onto VHS, are they
still better than an analogue camcorder even when this is done?

Whilst the quality of Dv *is* better than analogue, when you transfer it to
VHS I don't think you will see much difference, however it all depends on
the analogue source, if you analogue camera is a very old VHS type then you
might well see a difference, however if your old camera is a SVHS or a Hi8
camera and you are using standard VHS and not SVHS for your final tape,
there won't be any noticeable difference between DV and Analogue,

There is not a great deal of difference between SVHS/HI8 and
DV.....400 lines of resolution compared with 500 lines with DV.

But if your old camcorder was 8mm or VHS/VHSC then you'll notice a
great deal of difference........only 240 lines for VHS/VHSC and 8mm
is'nt much better.

The advantage of DV is lossless transfer to and editing in a computer.

Raw playback quality direct to a TV as won't be earth-shatteringly
better than that from the more recent generations of analogue camera.

Lots of quite technically aware people are holding back from DVD
burning until the format wars end. Casual users still plug camera
VHS recorder in their thousands, I suspect :_)

Rubbish, and with the issues around DVD compatibility and disk life I
suspect it will be a long time before VHS goes the why of Super 8 film or
Betamax tape....

Hek, some people don't even own a DVD player.

Please feel free to find a clue !
