| Someoneīs given me some MiniDV footage shot on Long Play, whatīs worse, on a different brand of camcorder than mine. It plays back fine through my camera, but I canīt capture it via Firewire through any apps Iīve tried. having just googled the problem it does seem to be quite a well known issue. What Iīd like to know is if anyone hereīs found a way around it other than capturing in analog - which does work BTW. Rob |

What Iīd like to know is if anyone hereīs found a way around it other than capturing in analog - which does work BTW. Rob Are you sure it's Long Play. and not ELP? It could well be, John. In fact this problem is bigger than I first thought: Although I did state that capturing in analog *does* work, I must admit I was not 100% correct - as I could see & hear the video playing back through my camcorder I assumed that capturing through analog (Matrox RT. X10) would be a foregone conclusion, it isnīt and I was wrong! I can get the sound but no picture. This LP or ELP business is really annoying: Personally, I think manufacturers include such stuff purely as a sales gimmick (a la recording directly to DVD or printers which print directly from memory cards), which gives nothing useful to serious users. If this footage wasnīt valuable for its content, then Iīd have just binned it by now! Iīm now gonna see if I can at least record the output from the camcorderīs analog connections onto an S-VHS recording deck. If I can, then at least I know I can get the footage onto computer from there. Rob |

My Sony camcorder plays it OK, but the stream canīt be captured even in analog! I agree about the LP bit - Personally Iīve never used it for anything remotely of importance. Iīll try to find out from the source what exactly they did to get this unusable material on to tape. Rob Gary MacKenzie Video Editor |

Have you got access (yourself or a borrow) to a DVD standalone recorder? Playing dodgey VHS E-to-E via the DVD recorder, with it's inbuilt TBC of sorts, certainly settles the picture down. Make sure you run the sound via the DV as well, otherwise there might (will?) be a sync problem. |

Thanks for the suggestions, but all is now cured - well "bodged" might be a better description. Had to record from camcorder to S-VHS deck, then pass - through via camcorder to computer. Quality is, considering itīs history, quite OK really. Iīll have to incorporate it as a sort of deliberate special effect as it certainly stands well below my own "all digital" material. Rob |

Still beats me why Canon et al sell this ELP idea as anything at all useful when you consider the fact that it is so useless as editable DV material. Oh well. Rob |

I suspect because it sells to the great 'unwashed' just like it being palm sized and auto everything but master of none.... |
