Default trimming tool for video files

I use Unphuck for trimming mp3's, and I would like a similar tool to
trim
video files that just trims and doesn't re-compress the file. It's
quicker and maintaing the file quality since it doesn't re-render the
movie file. It works just like digital scissors.

I also posted to "rec.video" and so did Giovanni as quoted below:

:::similar program, preferably freeware, that I can use for video
:::files? (avi, mpeg,etc..).
::: Thank you - Giovanni

Thanks ahead of time!

Depends on the format. For MPEG2, try mpeg2schnitt:

which works well for me (but you need to demultiplex 1st)
for other formats, look through the other tools on that site.

VirtualDub will trim AVI files in this way when used in Direct Stream
Copy mode. Cuts can start anywhere but must end at a keyframe so that
the segments that are left are decodable.

If the audio was compressed with VBR mp3 you will need to use
VirtualDubMod instead or sound sync will be lost. This program can also
edit OGM and MKV files.
