Default W: Tips for "tapeless recording" with DSR-PD170

Hi all !

I am currently deciding whether or not and which
harddrive storage to buy for "tapeless recording".

Models I have found so far are
- nNovia Quick Capture A2D (ca. 1000 USD)
(= Laird "CapDiv", "DataVideo DV Data Bank")

- Focus Firestore FS-4 (ca. 1200 USD)

- ADS Pyro DV Drive (ca 600 USD)

To me, real tapeless recording seems perfect
for taping, editing and airing stationary events quickly,
without the hazzle of pausing for tape changes every 40min,
plus capturing time, head wear, mastering back on DVCAM etc.

Especially the Pyro's specs read promising, but the
recognized problem with Sony's DSR-PD 170 is:
The camera itself doesn't trigger the harddrive
without recording on tape *simultaneously* -
which is what Canon XL2S and Pana DVX 100 do.

I'd be happy to get some hands on comments
on HD-recording in general, and on the above models.
(cc'd to my email ?)

the firestore devices are the ones from your choices i would choose.
the firestore 4's aren't shipping in the uk till next week for orders
made at videoforum , with recent orders going out as soon as enough
stock arrives.

I'll test the FS-4 with my PD 170 P this Friday,
round the neuk at Focus Europe HQ/COMO, this Friday.

The chaps are selling the FS-4 for 730 EUR net,
that is off the shelf, ex tax.
Videoguys sells it for 750 USD.

Add some shipping, standard surface USPS,
plus NO EU import tax for hard drives,
thereupon your national VAT, GST, EUSt.,
and you end up pretty much cheaper.
OTOH: The Pyro sells for less than 600 USD.

there is also a thread answer today

Thanks, Gary.

Still looking for any "tapeless" thread.
