| Something of a follow on from the post by "Munch". I am trying to gain knowledge about the way Analogue In works. There seem to be two options: 1 The DV Camera simply passes the message through and in to a PC via its own Firewire connection 2 The DV Camera actually records the images from the Analogue Camera. The DV Camera would then be able to play the images on to the PC via Firewire. Have I got that right? Has anyone got recommendations of each type in the £350 range. I would like to know what cables are used and whether they would normally come with the DV Camera? Looking at the connection it seems like an Audio Jack size but presumably it is different type of cable? When asking questions at a store the salesman told me that they only had cables for sending signals out of the DV Camera to an analogue source (He showed me the cable which had a directional arrow to support that statement) he said they did not sell cables for analogue coming in to the camera. Is he correct, won't a cable carry the message both ways? If these cables are not commonly found does anyone know where to buy? KM |

Conversion is on the fly. Of course, I can record to tape as well, if I want to. I would like to know what cables are used and whether they would normally come with the DV Camera? Looking at the connection it seems like an Audio Jack size but presumably it is different type of cable? I use the standard cable that goes from the camera and splits into 3 phono plugs, one video and one each for left and right stereo. If your source can use these, then you are set. When asking questions at a store the salesman told me that they only had cables for sending signals out of the DV Camera to an analogue source With Sony, you got (get) a converter SCART plug that accepts the 3 phono plugs. This is wired for output only, because there are different SCART pins for input. (He showed me the cable which had a directional arrow to support that statement) he said they did not sell cables for analogue coming in to the camera. Is he correct, won't a cable carry the message both ways? The cable will... it just depends on how you connect it. If these cables are not commonly found does anyone know where to buy? It depends on the device that you are outputting from, but you can buy from Maplin a switchable SCART lead that has 3 phonos at one end. You choose which direction you want the signal to go. All you need then is to make 3 leads with a female phono at each end. Anyone with a soldering iron can make these, or they may even be available to buy. |

The switching between "in and out" is done by the camera. It saves space not having dedicated "in" and "out" sockets. If the camera supports analogue in then it will probable support analogue passthrough to DV. There is no need to record to tape when passthrough is used. Camera don't tend to come with DV cables, and tend to only come "composite+ audio" cables. For best quality analogue in and out you want to use s-video. Cheaper camera don't support passthrough. but good deals can be had from internet companies for all DV camera's. Also there is a significant push this year for the use of True Widescreen. If you have a widesreen TV you don't want miss out on this and should consider paying a little extra. For example the Sony HC32 supports "passthrough", but is not True widescreen, and you should be able to get it for £380. If you want True widescreen and passthrough you need the HC42 which can be had for £440. |

I can do a pass-through from the computer (Firewire) to the VCR (analogue) but when I try to go from the VCR through to Firewire, the computer screen goes blank. Do I need to RTFM or is it not an option with this camera, please? Cheers, Dave -- "Inside every older person there is a younger one saying, "What the Hell happened?" There is a button on the remote that says AV-DV. That's cracked it. Thanks for the pointer. -- "The more Pooh looked; the more Piglet wasn't there!"
