Default SONY DCR-HC1000 problems in auto mode - bad picture quality

When I shoot in auto mode, the bright areas of the scene seems like
'flickering', I have to manually adjust the sharpness level down to 2
(settings 1 to 10) in order to eliminate that problem. I don't know if that
adjustment affects overall picture quality.

Is that normal?
