Default SONY TRV 33

I have a Sony TRV33 and have tried to creat a CD from the digital tape using
USB connection. I follow all software instructions on screen but only get
Video and no sound. Can Video and Audio both be recorded simultaniously
using USB
Any suggestions.
Bill

Sorry but USB data transfer rates are simply not fast enough for video, in
the real world [1], although Pinnacle now use USB2 and the connection
between breakout box and computer on their Edition product, but I suspect
that there is some serious buffering going on within the breakout box.

You really need to use the IEEE1394 (aka Firewire or Sony iLnk) port
together with a suitable cable and PCI board / CardBus.

[1] Even though on paper USB2 is fast enough.

You should be using firewire to transfer to the PC.

This misunderstanding comes up so often it must have something to do with
the manner in which Sony seem to hardly mention FireWire, but USB gets a
fair mention in the manuals.

Use USB for transfer of still pictures from the memory stick, but use
Firewire to move (capture) video.

In the UK that's very true. However, I've just bought a "new"
second-hand Sony DCR-TRV80E which was originally purchased in Germany
(but I bought it from the USA). It came with a good manual called
"Computer Applications Guide" (my copy is in English). It covers
everything, right from capturing stills, through capturing video using
iLink, right through to recording and capturing analogue using the
pass-through facility.

When I've got the time I might PDF it and put it up for download, since
it covers virtually all miniDV models that have DV-in (not by name
though).

I think you'll find Sony has their own software included with this (and
other) camcorders that enables the burning of a VCD direct from the
camera to a CD via the USB connection and it works very successfully!
Ide double check your audio connections and even double check that
there is audio on the tape even!

USB(1) is not fast enough to transfer video from miniDV tape to hard
disk (at 3.4MBps). USB2 *would* be fast enough, but at this time no Sony
camcorders support USB2.

And Sony's software is pants. It can be used to transfer the MPEG-1
video that you can save to memory-stick, but if that's your bag you
might as well buy a cheap still camera - since most have a video MPEG-1
facility.

I should perhaps have qualified that for the benefit of the nit-pickers
here. Sony's software (with the exception of Vegas and DVD Architect) is
pants.
