| Hi All I bought a fire wire card and cable for about £25 the other week and when I connect my camera to me computer the connection is intermediate. When, for instance the light to my room is turned on the connection drops out or if there is other electrical noise then the connection drops out. does this sound like the cable is not shielded? Should it be shielded? Thanks naveed |

Where can you get shielded telephone cable? Most often problems are caused by the routing telephone distribution cables near (and parallel to) mains leads. A friend signed up for a 1M broadband account but when the line was tested BT told the ISP that the line was too noisy. A guy two doors away from my friend was able to get the 1M connection (they are only about a half-mile from the exchange. We had a look at his wiring and re-routed it, and he applied again for a 1M connection - and he got it. Shielding, BTW, can make matters worse. If you have a look at BT's line quality report (which goes to the ISP and not to you - but some ISPs will identify what you line's failed on), one of the things is the maximum capacity [1] of the line. Shielding increases that capacity and can push it over the limit. Florescent lamps can cause interference. [1] Capacity in this context is not bandwidth but coulombs (farads). -- Tony Morgan http://www.camcord.info |

A Coulomb is an Amp-second and is a measure of charge. One Farad is one Coulomb per Volt and is a measure of capacitance. ROFL... Some people would go around the hedgerows of the country so that they could nit-pick off every hedgehog they could find :-) In case it escaped you, I was *simply* [1] making the distinction that "capacity" in this context was not that commonly associated with bandwidth. [1] "Simply" means that I wasn't on an ego-trip explaining electrical theory, but putting the word "capacity" in context. -- Tony Morgan http://www.camcord.info |
