| I have been using a Sony TR8E Hi8 for some years with excellent quality results. However, it has developed a fault and I am looking to get a new video camera. None of the shops that I have tried, (Including Sony & Jessops) seem prepared to say that I will get as good results from a digital camera. They all seem to be hesitant in confirming it. Can I get some opinions from experienced users who have changed from Hi8 to digital please. Can I expect to get as good or better results when viewed on a TV or are they marginally worse? Should I go for MiniDV, Digital8, or stick with HI8. Any comments would be much appreciated. Geoff. |

| The quality of DV will be far better than your Hi* recordings. "Anne & Geoff Smith" wrote in message ... I have been using a Sony TR8E Hi8 for some years with excellent quality results. I bougt a Canon MV3 (Alura) and i was not impressed at the first time, as i being using a Sony Video8 camera before that, I think that a much more expensive or a semiproff DVcamara could surprise me. But not this one. Of course i am happy because it is small, i can keep it in my pocket :-)) Just my opinion... Peter |

| Just a guess. The shops may be reflecting that some of the recent cameras, whilst having the benefits of DV in/out etc, have got smaller CCDs and more pixels which can reduce the signal / noise ratio in darker scenes. As an example - My TRV22 has a better low light performance than the more expensive TRV33 in the same series, and this is reflected in Sony's specs. Have never knowingly seen Hi8 so can't comment on comparison between Hi8 and miniDV. Try putting your query to www.simplydv.co.uk bulletin board. -- M Stewart Milton Keynes, UK www.megalith.freeserve.co.uk/oddimage.htm Anne & Geoff Smith wrote in message ... | If it was your first camera i would recommend Mini DV, they are smaller and have great quality, mine is a Sony PC9E and i think it's great. You must consider your tapes, you can't read them with a mini DV camera, of course you can convert them to mini DV if you buy one with analog input. pacman "Anne & Geoff Smith" wrote in message ... I had used a top of the range Panasonic Super VHS-C (NV-S90B) for around 8/9 years until it recently developed a fault. I initially looked at a number of options including the Canon 500/600i series and was disappointed with the specs and reslts from these models. I then decided to go a little upmarket and looked at the Sony dvr60/dvr80 and Panasonic 500 models. I ended up buying the Sony DVR80e and am absolutely delighted with it. Picture quality if anything is even better than my old Panasonic which was itself excellent. There are 3 huge bonuses with the DVR80 over my old deck: 3) I now have a decent stills option because of the 2 megapixel CCD (this may or may not be of interest) 2) Editing is infinitely easier (assuming you have a decent PC) 1) The anamorphic widescreen option on this machine is wonderful (you would never want to return to a conventional 4:3 format again). As long as you are prepared to pay a reasonable amount of money, I'd go for a good DV camcorder. Good luck! Harry |
