| I am looking to replace my Sony PC110E with a 3CCD professional camcorder and have found 3 options so far: Sony VX2000 Canon XL1S Canon XM-2 Anyone care to share their experiences on any of the above? I think the XL1S is the one most people are using or have used in the past as it is the one I have saw being used by Ben Dover (I think...) but still keen to know anyones thoughts on them - mostly will be used for indoors use and would like a decent optical zoom as well, anything else I should be looking out for? There is a considerable price difference between the XL1S and the XM2, can anyone point out the differences in laymans terms? Finally anyone recommend somewhere to buy them from bar the usual suspects like Jessops or anyone got one for sale? Thanks Jason (remove spam trap to reply) |

| I think you will find most of Ben Dover's stuff was shot on Sony gear. PD150 VX1000 and 2000 :-) I have an XL1s and it's a good camera, but has a few annoying things, the lack of good audio connections is one of them and the poor weight distribution giving the camera a very front heavy feel is another, on the plus side you can change the lenses and view finder for more professional types, however when you have done that, your camera will cost around as much as a full size professional job! I would steer clear of the XM-2 none of my friends have a good word to say about it.including Ben Dover's ex camera-man I would consider the Sony PD150, XL1s and the VX2000 probably in that order, I don't know what type of stuff you shoot, but if you want to shoot stuff like Ben Dover I would look at the VX2000, By the way none of the cameras you mentioned are 'professional', and you might have trouble selling the material to the TV stations if thats what you are trying to do. I got my XL1s on the web from www.WebElectricals.co.uk service was good and quick. "Jason" wrote in message ... | told ya I knew nothing about this! What cameras would be classed as professional or as near as then? This is for the adult industry BTW Jason "Headrush Films" . wrote in message ... This is for the adult industry BTW Jason Jason most of the guys in the adult industry use PD150 and a few like us use XL1s's The true professional gear is not really any good for the adult industry unless you are shooting in a TV studio, with cranes and studio pedestals, the camera gear is just too big and clumsy for shooting in most houses, cars and the back of the trucks.:-) The way most of us work is by shooting on prosumer gear and then spend a lot of time and effort making sure the signals are in spec. they also shoot a lot of tape and edit out the crap, much more than any light drama crew would. So why can you use just a (dockable) camera front end and a separate (portable) VTR [1] for example. If they can produce (ITV's) 'The Bill' in that way I'm sure people making your sort of production can... [1] via the 26 pin. |

I've never made an adult film but I've watched a few in my time (hope the wife isn't lurking) and I could see why they'd prefer a PD150 to a dockable head. Much more manoeuvrable for those, um, tight shots. You could also consider the new Panasonic DVX100. Simply it would be a nightmare with all the cables, imagine three cameras is a small room (most rooms are small with a crew of seven + the actors) it's bad enough with just the boom & shotgun mic cables. Drama like "The Bill" is filmed in a very different way, each shot is only 10 to 20 seconds, set up then shot! normally on only one camrera. Adult stuff tends to be shot in much longer sections, often several minuets. In adult stuff the actors can't switch on and off like in drama, you can't say to the male star "sorry mate there was a cable in the way can you do that shot again *wink* I'm sure you understand! |
